First Brick is the long awaited return of critically acclaimed emcee Rasheed Chappell. His debut LP “Future Before Nostalgia” was heralded as a classic by many in the indie Hip Hop scene. On First Brick Rasheed pairs once again with legendary producer Kenny Dope to provide the canvas for his vivid wordplay.

It’s been 7 years since Rasheed’s last release and First Brick serves as a reminder and reintroduction. It reminds those already familiar with Rasheed why he is held in such high regards by luminaries such as O.C., Lord Finesse, DJ Eclipse, DJ Scratch & DJ Clark Kent to name a few. It also serves as an introduction to those who may not be familiar with the work Rasheed had been putting down over the years.

Collaborating with the likes of Raheem DeVaughn, Apollo Brown, Diamond D and others has maintained his profile as an elite level rhyme sayer. First Brick provides an in-depth look into the mind and musings of Rasheed Chappell.

The title serves as a compass, leading the listener to the very beginnings of what made Rasheed the man he is. His crisp delivery and penchant for silver screen-esque lyricism is on full display on songs such as “101” and “ Shorty Rock Pt.1”.

The opening track “Breaking Ground” is a spoken word piece that informs the audience about the ride they’re about to embark on. All of life’s hardships and heroism are captured in his words. “Street Corner Shit” is a standout track that serves as an ode and cautionary tale to those that indulge in such recreation.

Unlike his debut LP, Rasheed isn’t the sole voice on this project. Enlisted are some of today’s truly exceptional rhyme spitters. CRIMEAPPLE and Daniel Son help paint a haunting picture on “Aiding & Abetting”. On the bar for bar banger “Kingsmen” Recognize Ali, Hus Kingpin, Napoleon Da Legend and Lil Fame of M.O.P. all pen precise poetic mayhem over a neck snapping Kenny Dope rhythm.

As the introduction of the album states, every building starts with a single break. As long as the foundation of Rasheed Chappell and Kenny Dope remain intact, expect nothing but good things.

lyrics

Verse 1

Welcome to my epic
Was written for your amusement
All my years of living’
I put it inside the music
Sorry for confusion illusions I don’t provide
Hungry bellies turn to felons
The place I reside
Homicide on the daily
Babies born to addiction
The outside world I offer
My description
Clinics abort a fetus
The loss of Black genius
Adidas hang on wires as a symbol of death
Life we don’t appreciate
Houses they depreciate
Use anything to numb it out
Helps to alleviate
The load carried
Roads travelled alone
It’s my poetic justice
I’m facing life in this poem

Verse 2

Started as a hobby for fun
Rhyming for sport
To my people I’m their savior
Live I report
As a portrait of humanity
Forgotten by society
Often emulated now ain’t that fucking irony
They package and they sell it
Distribute and make millions
We fight for the crumbs from the top
Through glass ceilings
Pray that we can make it out
Cause we got hopes and dreams
But they hard to attain
With no ways and means
So we cook clean
Athlete Rap Sing
Ghetto and the Barrios
Africans and Latins
I speak for you
I sincerely do
I see your beauty
And they gon’ see it too

Verse 3

I’m from the cesspool parasites
Celsius Fahrenheit
Ice cold
Life’s a gamble
Every steps a dice roll
Tread light red white blues the demeanor
Informers turn subpoenas
Subpoenas come from a snitch
No glitch on your computer screen
iPhone Droid
System incompatible
We all non void
My anatomy of chaos
Preachers searching for souls
Pushers looking for bodies
Devil luring them both
No apology
Prophecies written in blood
I’m the hate that hate made
Lines written with love
Welcome to my epic
I live it for your amusement
Everything I have
I leave it inside the music
Enjoy

I hope you enjoy
It’s all that I have
It’s all that I am
And I share it with you
